Consecutive interpreting (also called liaison,
whispered & ad hoc interpreting)
Consecutive interpreting is when an interpreter
waits until a speaker has finished speaking and
then either summarises or fully translates the meaning
to the other party. It works for face-to-face meetings
or small groups and does not normally require equipment.
As all contributions to a conversation are effectively
doubled it becomes a time-consuming process. Whispered
interpreting is the same thing but the interpreter
sits behind the speaker or listener and whispers
the interpretation in their ear. It works well when
there is only one language pair - if you have several
language pairs going on at the same time it means
a lot of whispering and becomes very distracting
for all concerned.
Court and Public Service interpreting
Interpreting for public service (e.g. courtrooms,
social services, doctor-patient discussions, and
police interviews) requires a special skill set
and adequately trained interpreters. Geo works only
with carefully selected interpreters who hold the
Diploma in Public Service Interpreting for such

Simultaneous interpreting
Simultaneous interpreting is when an interpreter
relays information near enough at the same moment
as a person speaks. This is the technique used for
most formal meetings because it reduces time delays.
It also works well when more than one language pair
is in use because interpreters use specialist equipment
(e.g. soundproof booths and infrared headsets) so
that their voices are only audible to delegates
that wear a headset. This type of interpreting is
the most demanding skill mentally. It is normal
to use two interpreters per language pair, who will
normally work in 20 minute shifts. Professional
simultaneous interpreters are in demand and are
booked well in advance. It is essential to consider
this when planning a conference.

Telephone interpreting
We can arrange for a telephone interpreter
to be patched into your conference phone call or
make a call in a foreign language on your behalf.
Geo selects people with a good telephone manner
and voice for such assignments in order to assure
