Bengali is spoken in the Indian states of West Bengal, Tripura and Assam where it is an official language. It is also, coincidentally, spoken in Bangladesh as the national language. In India, Bengali is the second most spoken language and with 250 million native speakers, it is the world’s 7th most spoken language. In the UK, Bengali was the 5th most spoken language in 2011.
There are several dialects and two styles of writing. Words used by Bengali speakers differ according to the speaker’s religion. For example, a Hindu would generally use words derived from Sanskrit, and Muslims would most likely use words from Persian and Arabic origin.
