Burmese is the language of Myanmar, formerly known as Burma. It is part of the Sino-Tibetan language group with Chinese.
It uses the Burmese alphabet, which is made of 33 consonants and 12 vowels (compared to 21 consonants and 5 vowels in English). There are no spaces between words, although a space made be added between clauses to make it easier to read.
Burmese doesn’t have adjectives (e.g. beautiful, pretty) as such but uses verbs with a specific particle (e.g. person + be beautiful).
The “standard” variant of Burmese is spoken around the Irrawaddy River valley. Burmese is a diglossic language – it has a formal written form used in newspapers and the like and an informal form used for any informal communication such as speech, television or even comics.
