Cambodian is an Austroasiatic language alongside Vietnamese. These two are the most widely spoken languages in this language group.
Unlike nearby languages such as Thai or Vietnamese, Cambodian is not a tonal language. The stress on words is always on the last syllable.
Cambodian uses the Khmer script, which is a syllabic script meaning each character includes a consonant and inherent vowel. About 80% of Cambodians can read Khmer.
