Interesting Fact

The Cebuano language was heavily influenced by Spanish during the colonial period; for example, Cebuano words include “merkado” (market) and “gwapa” (beautiful), both from Spanish. English influence also features in words like “brislit” (bracelet) or “syápin” (shopping).

Profile

The Cebuano language is a member of the Malayo-Polynesian language group. Other languages in this language group include Tagalog, Maori and Malagasy.

Cebuano is the second most spoken language in the Philippines with 21 million speakers, predominantly from the Bisaya ethnic group from the Central Visayas. It is referred to as “Bisaya” by native speakers. The word Cebuano is derived from the name “Cebu”, which is the island where it is spoken.

Cebuano is also closely related to other Filipino languages such as Tagalog and Hiligaynon. The language varies significantly depending on where it is spoken.
