Chichewa was the only national language of Malawi from 1968 to 1994. Now, Malawi has 2 official languages (English and Chichewa) and 7 recognised regional languages.
In Zambia, the language is generally known as Nyanja or Cinyanja/Chinyanja '(language) of the lake' (referring to Lake Malawi).
