Interesting Fact

In the Fijian language, interestingly, there are four forms for a grammatical number: singular, dual, paucal and plural. Paucal denotes an imprecise but small number of objects.

Profile

Fijian is spoken by half a million native speakers in Fiji, roughly half of the country’s population. It is the official language of Fiji, alongside English and Hindustani (Hindi/Urdu).

While Fijian only became an official language of Fiji in 1997, there are currently political movements seeking to make it a national language and to require students in Fiji to study the language.

Fijian is a member of Malayo-Polynesian language group. Other languages in this language group include Tagalog, Maori and Malagasy.
