Guarani belongs to the Tupian language group. It is spoken mostly in Paraguay where it is an official language along with Spanish, but there are also Guarani speaking communities in Argentina, Bolivia and Brazil.
It is one of the original indigenous languages of South America before the Spanish colonisation and is now protected in the Paraguayan constitution to give it equal status with Spanish.
Although less than 5% of Paraguayans can claim to be indigenous, it is estimated that nearly 50% of Paraguayans speak Guarani as a first language.
