Hawaiian is a Polynesian language spoken in Hawai’i where it is an official language alongside English. Other languages in this language group include Tagalog, Maori and Malagasy.
Hawai’i is the only state in the U.S. that has designated a native language, Hawaiian, as one of its two official state languages. Despite its status, Hawaiian is an endangered language, with only 2000 native speakers – a worrying situation for a rich language that has contributed many useful loanwords to English (Kahuna, Ukelele, Wiki, Hula, Aloha etc.).
