Lingala was first called ‘Bangala’ and was first renamed ‘Lingala’ in 1901, but the proposition to change its name took some decades to come into play.

Profile

Lingala is a Bantu language spoken in the northwest of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and in the north of the Republic of the Congo. Lingala is largely based on the Bobangi language. Lingala has been used as the lingua franca of the armed forces.
