Interesting Fact

Spoken by around a fifth of Ukrainians, Surzhyk is a dialect that combines Russian vocabulary with Ukrainian grammar and pronunciation; it's considered by Ukrainian language activists to be a threat to the Ukrainian language.

Ukrainian is an East Slavic language written with a modified Cyrillic script. Other languages in this language group include Macedonian, Bosnian and Czech.

It is the official state language of Ukraine and one of the two main languages of Ukraine, alongside Russian. In terms of vocabulary, Ukrainian is related most closely to Belarussian (84%) and Polish (70%). It is mutually intelligible with Belarussian and Russian.

Roughly two-thirds of Ukrainians speak Ukrainian as their native language and one-third speak Russian.
