Uzbek is a Turkic language and the national language of Uzbekistan.
An early form of Uzbek, called “Chagatai” after one of the sons of Genghis Khan and written with the Arabic script, emerged as a literary language in the 14th century.
It has been written with various scripts over time, from Arabic to Cyrillic to Latin to Cyrillic again, before officially reverting back to Latin script. Cyrillic script remains in use, and sometimes both scripts can be found used in the same document.
